Claudia Schiffer sparks controversy as 'blacked up' cover girl
Claudia Schiffer has been criticised for modelling a ‘blacked up’ face for German magazine Stern Fotographie.

The three-year-old cover shot, photographed by Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld has sparked outrage.

The German supermodels’ agent told the Daily Mail the six alternative covers, including a secretary look and Marie Antoinette, depicted different men's fantasies - and that ‘people should not jump to conclusions’.

Six months ago Lara Stone also featured a blacked up face which industry insiders found offensive.

‘There are not enough women of colour featured in mainstream magazines,’ Shevelle Rhule, fashion editor of black women’s magazine, Pride, told the newspaper.

‘This just suggests you can counteract the problem by using white models... No thought has been given to the history behind what they have done and the comparisons it draws with minstrel shows.’
